- Maple syrup gels seem to hold up better in the really cold temperatures than others. Check out Untapped, Brix, or Endurance Tap for brands that carry maple syrup gels.
- When running on ice, use short, quick strides and don’t look at your feet. Use trail runners that have a rubber outsole that doesn’t freeze as easily in the cold, so that they have a bit more grip on the ice.
- Also with ice, if you are afraid to fall then you have more chance of falling, because most likely your body will be more rigid. Relax, breathe, and slow your pace a bit if you are feeling nervous.
- Layer like an onion. Wear clothes that breathe, and cover your neck to protect your throat.
- Run against the wind to start on an out and back, so that when you turn around to go home things will seem warmer and possibly easier.
- Use hand warmers other places than just on your hands. Consider putting them in your shoes to prevent cold toes, having one near your phone so it doesn’t die in the cold, and/or keep them near your water flasks so they don’t freeze. I do know that hand warmers can get pricey, so don’t go too crazy, but consider checking Costco for their large boxes of them.
6.5 You’re not a failure if you decide to stay warm inside, whether it is to use the treadmill, run on the track, or just take a nap, the cold will still be there for you to embrace tomorrow.
